About this practice
Slow, spoken guidance for financial stress. A softening session you can do at bedtime. A guided session of about 7 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: financial stress
Money worry runs at night, when there is nothing to do about it. The lack of any available action keeps the nervous system activated for hours.
It tends to show up as:
- Lying awake doing arithmetic
- A clenched stomach opening the bank app
- Irritability about small spending
At 2am there is no decision to make, only a night to get through. That is the whole job of this practice.
Doing this before bed
- Do it in bed or somewhere you can move straight to bed after
- Lower the light, and do not check anything afterwards
- If you fall asleep before the end, it worked
Falling asleep mid-session is a success, not a failure to complete it.
How softening works
Softening is the practice of releasing held tension degree by degree rather than all at once. It targets the physical grip — shoulders, jaw, gut — that persists long after the stressor has passed.
- Soften one place per exhale rather than everything at once
- Let warmth and gravity do the work instead of muscular effort
- If a place will not soften, leave it and go somewhere that will
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Notice the temperature of the air on the backs of your hands.
- 0:13You can be as unimpressive as you like for the next few minutes.
- 0:26We're going to move through the body in order, roughly from top to bottom.
- 0:40If some part of you is resisting this, that resistance is worth noticing too.
- 0:54Follow three breaths and let the fourth one go unobserved.
- 1:06Notice the small pause before your body decides to breathe in again.
- 1:19Notice your shoulders, one at a time. The left one first.
- 1:31Notice your ribs on both sides. Wide, not squeezed.
- 1:42Feel the back of your neck. That's a place that holds a lot.
- 1:55Remind yourself, slowly: I am safe in this moment, even while the arithmetic that will not balance is here. Safety and difficulty can share a room.
- 2:14If the worry that follows the bills has been with you all day, it is probably tired too. Let it rest alongside you.
- 2:32Let your thumbs rest wherever they landed.
- 2:42A few seconds more.
- 2:51Let the breath move at the speed of a sleeping person.
- 3:03Notice your lower back. Let it curve however it curves.
- 3:15If you've lost track of where we were, you haven't lost anything important.
- 3:28A short silence. Let it be empty.
- 3:38If you only manage half of it, that's half more than nothing.
- 3:51If you feel restless, that's a feeling, not a failure.
- 4:03Feel the air as it passes the back of your throat. It's cooler going in.
- 4:17Quiet now. The next part will wait for you.
- 4:28You have been carrying the fear about money in the night for a while. You can set it down for the length of this session and pick it up after.
- 4:49Notice how the arithmetic that will not balance changes shape when you stop resisting it. Usually it gets smaller, not bigger.
- 5:06Let the out-breath be a little longer than the in-breath, without forcing it.
- 5:19Notice the pull to make this mean something. It doesn't have to.
- 5:32If a worry shows up, name it quietly and let it sit beside you.
- 5:46I'll leave a gap here. Use it however you like.
- 5:58We'll take this slowly, and there's no version of this where you get it wrong.
- 6:12Before you move, notice one thing that's fine right now.
- 6:24Let your jaw, shoulders and hands be loose as you finish.
- 6:36Let the pause stretch out.
