About this practice

Nothing to learn and nothing to fix: 7 minutes of body scan for self-doubt, before bedtime. A guided session of about 7 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: self-doubt

Self-doubt is a prediction, not a measurement. It reads uncertainty as evidence of inability, which is why it survives despite contrary evidence.

It tends to show up as:

  • Questioning your ability before starting
  • Assuming you are the least capable in the room
  • Hesitating to state an opinion

Confidence is not required to act. This practice lowers the temperature enough that acting stops needing confidence first.

Doing this before sleep

  • Dim the lights and put the phone out of reach
  • Do it in bed if that helps you stay there
  • Let yourself fall asleep rather than finishing it

Checking anything afterwards undoes most of it. Let this be the last thing.

How body scan works

A body scan moves attention systematically through the body, region by region. It does not try to change what it finds — it builds a map of what is actually there, which is often different from what you assumed.

  • Move slowly, head to feet or feet to head, and do not skip the uncomfortable areas
  • Meet each region with plain curiosity rather than a verdict
  • Numbness and absence of sensation are findings too

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Keep your eyes open if you like, resting on one point of the floor a metre or two ahead.
  2. 0:16Visit each area with plain curiosity, not with a verdict. Sensation is information, not a problem.
  3. 0:31Imagine your thoughts as traffic on a road you're standing beside. You don't have to flag any of it down.
  4. 0:48If it helps, imagine your attention is a torch beam. Right now it's wide and soft.
  5. 1:03Notice where you feel the breath most clearly. Nose, chest, or belly — pick one and stay there.
  6. 1:19Let your breathing find the rhythm it uses when you're almost asleep.
  7. 1:32Notice your lower back. Let it curve however it curves.
  8. 1:44Feel the outline of yourself, from the top of your head to your heels.
  9. 1:58Notice your shoulders, one at a time. The left one first.
  10. 2:10If the question mark over your ability shows up, let it be there without arguing with it. You are not trying to remove it, just to sit beside it.
  11. 2:31the fear that you are not enough may quiet down, or it may not. Either is fine. We are practising staying, not performing calm.
  12. 2:50Notice your breathing, without changing it.
  13. 3:00Take the next breath slowly.
  14. 3:09Notice the breath you're taking right now. That's the only one that exists.
  15. 3:22I'll stop for a moment. Take the pause at your own speed.
  16. 3:35Start at the crown of the head and move down slowly. Do not skip to the parts that hurt.
  17. 3:51Notice anything you're holding onto from earlier today.
  18. 4:02Let the breath move at the speed of a sleeping person.
  19. 4:14Let's rest here in silence. It's short.
  20. 4:24If the small voice saying you cannot starts telling you a story, let the story finish without you adding to it.
  21. 4:41When the question mark over your ability presses in, put a hand on your chest or your belly. Warmth and pressure are anchors your body already trusts.
  22. 5:01Let the in-breath be short and the out-breath unhurried.
  23. 5:12If you're replaying a conversation, let it play. It'll finish on its own.
  24. 5:25If you're judging your performance, that's the same habit as judging everything else.
  25. 5:38Pause here. Count three breaths if you need an anchor.
  26. 5:50Move at the speed of your attention, not the speed of a checklist. There is no schedule to keep.
  27. 6:06Come back to the room through your senses, one at a time.
  28. 6:19Let your jaw, shoulders and hands be loose as you finish.
  29. 6:31No need to open your eyes yet.
