About this practice

A 20-minute grounding session for self-doubt, on your commute. No app, no account — press start. A guided session of about 20 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: self-doubt

Self-doubt is a prediction, not a measurement. It reads uncertainty as evidence of inability, which is why it survives despite contrary evidence.

It tends to show up as:

  • Questioning your ability before starting
  • Assuming you are the least capable in the room
  • Hesitating to state an opinion

Confidence is not required to act. This practice lowers the temperature enough that acting stops needing confidence first.

Doing this on your commute

  • Headphones on, eyes open or closed depending on your comfort
  • Keep one part of your attention on your stop
  • Do it standing if sitting is not possible — nobody is watching

Commuting time is already dead time. Nothing is being given up.

How grounding works

Grounding brings attention to physical contact and the immediate environment. It works on the principle that the body cannot be somewhere else, so contact with the surface you are on is always available as an anchor.

  • Feel the contact points — feet, seat, back — and let them take your weight
  • Use the senses deliberately: what you can see, hear, touch
  • Return to solidity whenever attention drifts

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Let your tongue rest down, away from the roof of your mouth.
  2. 0:13We'll keep it quiet and unhurried.
  3. 0:23Let the last hour go on its own. You can pick it up again afterwards.
  4. 0:37Let your body feel heavier than it did a minute ago. Let the chair or the floor take it.
  5. 0:53Let your breathing find the rhythm it uses when you're almost asleep.
  6. 1:06Notice the small gap after each exhale. Rest there for half a second.
  7. 1:19Notice your breathing, without changing it.
  8. 1:29Notice your whole body as one shape, sitting or lying here.
  9. 1:41Let your whole body be as heavy as it wants to be.
  10. 1:54Notice the backs of your knees, which you feel more than you think.
  11. 2:07Feel the front of your chest. Notice it rise and fall once.
  12. 2:20Notice how the small voice saying you cannot changes shape when you stop resisting it. Usually it gets smaller, not bigger.
  13. 2:37There is no correct amount of the question mark over your ability to be feeling right now. Whatever is here is the honest amount.
  14. 2:56Count four breaths silently. Then stop counting and just follow.
  15. 3:08There is a part of you that has handled hard moments before. That part is here now, even if it is quiet.
  16. 3:26If the small voice saying you cannot has been with you all day, it is probably tired too. Let it rest alongside you.
  17. 3:44Count down from ten, one number per exhale.
  18. 3:55If you've lost track of where we were, you haven't lost anything important.
  19. 4:08We'll take this slowly, and there's no version of this where you get it wrong.
  20. 4:22A short silence. Let it be empty.
  21. 4:32Notice anything you're holding onto from earlier today.
  22. 4:43If you only manage half of it, that's half more than nothing.
  23. 4:56I'll leave a gap here. Use it however you like.
  24. 5:08Notice any tension that arrived while you weren't looking.
  25. 5:19There's no need to try harder than this.
  26. 5:30Quiet for a moment. No need to fill it.
  27. 5:41Notice whether you're breathing or holding. Start breathing again.
  28. 5:52Nothing here needs to be efficient.
  29. 6:02Nothing to follow for a moment except your own breathing.
  30. 6:14Notice if you're being hard on yourself about any of this.
  31. 6:26You can be as unimpressive as you like for the next few minutes.
  32. 6:39Let's pause. Just the breathing for a while.
  33. 6:50Notice if your attention is in the future. Bring it back to the room.
  34. 7:04Let this be easy, if easy is available.
  35. 7:15A gap. Don't rush to fill it with thinking.
  36. 7:26If you're sleepy, sit up a little. Or let the sleepiness be there.
  37. 7:39Stay a moment longer than is comfortable.
  38. 7:49Let your breathing be boring. Boring is good here.
  39. 8:00Notice the weight of your thighs, all the way down.
  40. 8:12I'll stop for a moment. Take the pause at your own speed.
  41. 8:25Notice any urge to check something. You can wait two more minutes.
  42. 8:38Stay with it.
  43. 8:46Feel the air move past your upper lip. It's the coolest spot on the way in.
  44. 9:01Let the whole of your left foot be heavy.
  45. 9:12Silence. Let your shoulders drop again if they've crept up.
  46. 9:24If a song is stuck in your head, let it play in the background.
  47. 9:38Let the breath be shallow if shallow is what your body wants.
  48. 9:51Just the breath, still.
  49. 10:00If you're replaying a conversation, let it play. It'll finish on its own.
  50. 10:13Pause here. Count three breaths if you need an anchor.
  51. 10:25Feel your knees. They're just hinges, but they've worked hard.
  52. 10:37Let the breath move at the speed of a sleeping person.
  53. 10:49A few seconds more.
  54. 10:58Notice if you've been frowning at your own thoughts.
  55. 11:09Let me stop talking. Follow the breath instead.
  56. 11:20Notice your jaw again. Let your back teeth part slightly.
  57. 11:32Let the exhale empty you a little more than usual, but not to the point of strain.
  58. 11:47Stay here a little longer.
  59. 11:56Feel your calves, front and back.
  60. 12:06Breathe in for four, out for six, if you'd like something to count.
  61. 12:19Remain here for a few more breaths.
  62. 12:29Now feel both feet at once. That's a lot of contact with the world.
  63. 12:43Let each breath out be a small letting go of the muscles around your ribs.
  64. 12:57Let it be this simple.
  65. 13:06Notice your lower back. Let it curve however it curves.
  66. 13:18Feel the pause at the top of the in-breath. It's shorter than you think.
  67. 13:32Let the pause stretch out.
  68. 13:41Let your throat soften. There's nothing to swallow right now.
  69. 13:53Let your shoulders stay still while your ribs move.
  70. 14:04Keep following the air.
  71. 14:13Feel your palms. Warm or cool, either is fine.
  72. 14:24Notice your breathing getting quieter on its own, without you deciding anything.
  73. 14:37Let your body keep settling.
  74. 14:46Start at the top of your head. Notice the scalp, which you almost never notice.
  75. 15:00Think of the question mark over your ability as a guest that arrived without knocking. You can let it stand in the hallway.
  76. 15:18Silence for a few breaths. Nothing to do in it.
  77. 15:30You do not have to like the fear that you are not enough to breathe through it. Liking was never the requirement.
  78. 15:48Feel the last part of the exhale, where it turns into nothing.
  79. 16:01Each time your mind hands you the small voice saying you cannot, treat it like a leaf on a stream. Present for a moment, then carried on.
  80. 16:21the question mark over your ability may quiet down, or it may not. Either is fine. We are practising staying, not performing calm.
  81. 16:39Let your ribs widen on the in-breath instead of your shoulders lifting.
  82. 16:52If the fear that you are not enough shows up, let it be there without arguing with it. You are not trying to remove it, just to sit beside it.
  83. 17:13You are allowed to be unimpressed by the small voice saying you cannot. Indifference is a legitimate response.
  84. 17:29Notice the first breath of the day versus this one. They're the same mechanism.
  85. 17:43If you feel restless, that's a feeling, not a failure.
  86. 17:55Notice the pull to make this mean something. It doesn't have to.
  87. 18:08If you're judging your performance, that's the same habit as judging everything else.
  88. 18:21I'll step back. You stay here.
  89. 18:31Small efforts are the whole method.
  90. 18:41Let the quiet do its work.
  91. 18:51Take a moment to notice you did this for yourself. That's not nothing.
  92. 19:04Let your jaw, shoulders and hands be loose as you finish.
