About this practice
Nothing to learn and nothing to fix: 5 minutes of noting for exhaustion, on the morning of an interview. A guided session of about 5 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: exhaustion
Exhaustion is what is left after the reserves are gone. The body has stopped asking; it is now insisting.
It tends to show up as:
- Feeling hollow and drained
- Emotionally flat
- Physical heaviness all day
This is not the state to push in. The whole point here is to ask nothing and let the body be heavy.
Doing this before an interview
- Do it where you will not be interrupted, even if that is a stairwell
- Have the first sentence of your answer ready afterwards
- Keep it short — there is no time for a long session
Nerves before an interview are normal and not something to eliminate. You need access to what you know, nothing more.
How noting works
Noting is a technique from insight practice: when something arises, you give it a single plain label — thinking, hearing, planning — and return to the anchor. The label creates a small distance between you and the content.
- Use one word, not a sentence — explaining means you have joined in
- Label and return; do not follow the thought to see where it goes
- Drop the labelling if it becomes effortful and just follow the breath
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Let your forehead smooth out. Most of us hold a small frown there all day.
- 0:14If you only manage half of it, that's half more than nothing.
- 0:27There's no correct speed. Slower isn't better. Steadier is the only aim.
- 0:40Bring your attention to where your body meets the surface underneath you.
- 0:53Breathe in through your nose and out through your nose, if that's comfortable.
- 1:06Let your breathing get quieter rather than deeper.
- 1:17Notice your hands again. Check whether they've loosened on their own.
- 1:29Feel the middle of your back, the part that never gets attention.
- 1:42Now feel both feet at once. That's a lot of contact with the world.
- 1:56A few seconds more.
- 2:05A few seconds of nothing now. That's on purpose.
- 2:16There's no need to try harder than this.
- 2:27If you're thinking about the next thing on your list, that list will still be there.
- 2:42You do not have to win against the drained feeling that rest has not touched. You only have to breathe until the next moment arrives.
- 3:01Say to yourself: this is uncomfortable, and I can stay with it for one more breath. Then take that breath.
- 3:18Count down from ten, one number per exhale.
- 3:29Notice where the body asking you to stop lives in your body. Chest, throat, stomach. Rest your attention there without trying to change it.
- 3:48If you feel emotional, you don't have to explain it to anyone, including yourself.
- 4:02Let's rest here in silence. It's short.
- 4:12We'll take this slowly, and there's no version of this where you get it wrong.
- 4:26Let your jaw, shoulders and hands be loose as you finish.
- 4:38Stay here a little longer.
