About this practice
5 minutes to meet self-doubt with less of a fight. A noting practice, in the middle of the night. A guided session of about 5 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: self-doubt
Self-doubt is a prediction, not a measurement. It reads uncertainty as evidence of inability, which is why it survives despite contrary evidence.
It tends to show up as:
- Questioning your ability before starting
- Assuming you are the least capable in the room
- Hesitating to state an opinion
Confidence is not required to act. This practice lowers the temperature enough that acting stops needing confidence first.
Doing this at 3am
- Do not check the time and do not turn on a light
- Stay lying down if you can — sitting up makes it harder to return to sleep
- Do not try to solve anything that arrives at this hour
Problems at 3am feel enormous because of chemistry, not because they are actually bigger. Defer them.
How noting works
Noting is a technique from insight practice: when something arises, you give it a single plain label — thinking, hearing, planning — and return to the anchor. The label creates a small distance between you and the content.
- Use one word, not a sentence — explaining means you have joined in
- Label and return; do not follow the thought to see where it goes
- Drop the labelling if it becomes effortful and just follow the breath
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00You don't have to empty your mind. Nobody has ever managed that, including the people who wrote the instructions.
- 0:16Notice the gap between the label and the next thought. That gap is what we are practising.
- 0:31You can let your eyes close now if they weren't already.
- 0:43If your mind is loud, that's information, not failure.
- 0:54Notice the difference between the breath at the front of your nose and the breath in your chest.
- 1:10Breathe in through your nose and out through your nose, if that's comfortable.
- 1:23Feel the parts of you that have gone quiet.
- 1:34Let your whole body be as heavy as it wants to be.
- 1:47Notice the backs of your knees, which you feel more than you think.
- 2:00Let your body keep settling.
- 2:09You are the one noticing, not the thing being noticed. Stay on that side of the line.
- 2:24Notice any tension that arrived while you weren't looking.
- 2:35Let the small voice saying you cannot be exactly as big as it is, and let your breath be exactly as slow as it is. They can coexist.
- 2:55If the question mark over your ability is loud right now, make your attention smaller. Just the next breath. Nothing beyond it.
- 3:13Follow three breaths and let the fourth one go unobserved.
- 3:25When the fear that you are not enough presses in, put a hand on your chest or your belly. Warmth and pressure are anchors your body already trusts.
- 3:45Notice the moment you realise you've drifted. That moment is the whole skill.
- 3:58Silence. Let your shoulders drop again if they've crept up.
- 4:10A label is enough. You do not need to follow the thought to see where it goes.
- 4:25Let the pace of the last few minutes set the pace of the next few.
- 4:39Let the quiet do its work.
