About this practice
When self-doubt shows up before a busy day, this 5-minute self-compassion session gives you somewhere to put it down. A guided session of about 5 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: self-doubt
Self-doubt is a prediction, not a measurement. It reads uncertainty as evidence of inability, which is why it survives despite contrary evidence.
It tends to show up as:
- Questioning your ability before starting
- Assuming you are the least capable in the room
- Hesitating to state an opinion
Confidence is not required to act. This practice lowers the temperature enough that acting stops needing confidence first.
Doing this before a busy day
- Do it before the first message or notification
- Aim for steadiness rather than energy
- Decide the first task afterwards, not during
The point is to begin without already being behind, not to prepare for every possibility.
How self-compassion works
Self-compassion practice changes the tone of the inner voice rather than the content of the thoughts. It uses the same warmth and steadiness you would offer a friend, applied without requiring you to have earned it.
- Use the words you would actually say to someone you love
- Ask what you need, not what you deserve
- A hand on the chest or belly gives warmth and pressure a place to land
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Unclench your jaw. You were probably holding it without noticing.
- 0:12Notice the tone you are using on yourself. If it would wound a friend, it is not the truth.
- 0:28Notice whether your breathing is high in your chest or low in your belly. Just notice. No fixing.
- 0:44Notice your own pulse somewhere. Wrist, throat, wherever you can find it.
- 0:57Let the exhale fall out rather than pushing it.
- 1:08Let the breath move at the speed of a sleeping person.
- 1:20Feel the soles of your feet. All the weight of you goes through them.
- 1:34Feel your calves, front and back.
- 1:44Feel the skin around your eyes. Let the muscles behind them go loose.
- 1:57Let this one be unhurried.
- 2:06Whatever you are about to say to yourself, imagine saying it to someone you love. Use those words.
- 2:22If a worry shows up, name it quietly and let it sit beside you.
- 2:36If the small voice saying you cannot shows up, let it be there without arguing with it. You are not trying to remove it, just to sit beside it.
- 2:57You do not have to solve the question mark over your ability in these few minutes. Your only job is to keep breathing while it is here.
- 3:17Let the breath be slow enough that you can hear it, just barely.
- 3:30Imagine softening the edges of the fear that you are not enough. Not erasing it, just letting the sharp parts go a degree softer.
- 3:49Your mind will leave about a hundred times. Come back about a hundred times.
- 4:03Let's rest here in silence. It's short.
- 4:13Say it once, plainly: this is hard, and I am allowed to find it hard.
- 4:27When you're ready, look around properly.
- 4:37Keep following the air.
