About this practice
A 10-minute grounding session for financial stress, after a horrible day. No app, no account — press start. A guided session of about 10 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: financial stress
Money worry runs at night, when there is nothing to do about it. The lack of any available action keeps the nervous system activated for hours.
It tends to show up as:
- Lying awake doing arithmetic
- A clenched stomach opening the bank app
- Irritability about small spending
At 2am there is no decision to make, only a night to get through. That is the whole job of this practice.
Doing this after a bad day
- Do not review the day during it — that is what tomorrow is for
- Something physical first, then this
- Keep it short and end it deliberately
A bad day does not need a verdict. Closing it without a post-mortem is allowed.
How grounding works
Grounding brings attention to physical contact and the immediate environment. It works on the principle that the body cannot be somewhere else, so contact with the surface you are on is always available as an anchor.
- Feel the contact points — feet, seat, back — and let them take your weight
- Use the senses deliberately: what you can see, hear, touch
- Return to solidity whenever attention drifts
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Find one place in your body that already feels fine. Use that as the starting point.
- 0:15If your mind has gone somewhere else, the floor under you has not moved. Start from there.
- 0:30Let your body be exactly as tired as it is.
- 0:42For the next few minutes, the only job is to notice what's already happening.
- 0:56Notice if your breathing is faster than you expected. Don't correct it. Just note it.
- 1:10Let the exhale empty you a little more than usual, but not to the point of strain.
- 1:25Notice your fingers, one by one, starting with the little finger.
- 1:37Feel your upper arms hanging. They're heavier than you remember.
- 1:49Now feel both feet at once. That's a lot of contact with the world.
- 2:03Feel your heart somewhere in there, doing its work without instructions.
- 2:15Notice the space around the worry that follows the bills. It is there, even if it is small. Put your attention in that space.
- 2:34Notice where the fear about money in the night lives in your body. Chest, throat, stomach. Rest your attention there without trying to change it.
- 2:53If you feel numb, that's a valid thing to feel. Nothing to fix.
- 3:06Press down slightly and feel the push back. Your body already knows where it is.
- 3:20Nothing to follow for a moment except your own breathing.
- 3:32Your mind will leave about a hundred times. Come back about a hundred times.
- 3:46The floor is holding you right now. You do not have to hold yourself up.
- 4:00A few seconds of nothing now. That's on purpose.
- 4:11Notice any tension that arrived while you weren't looking.
- 4:22Name what you can see, hear and touch. Counting senses is not a distraction; it is the practice.
- 4:38I'll be quiet for a moment. Stay with the breath.
- 4:50Breathe as if you had all evening. There's no rush in this part.
- 5:03Just the breath, still.
- 5:12Notice your toes, starting with the big one on the left.
- 5:24Feel your breath move down your back, all the way to your lower ribs.
- 5:38Take the next breath slowly.
- 5:47Feel the tops of your thighs.
- 5:57Let the out-breath be a little longer than the in-breath, without forcing it.
- 6:10Nothing changes for a moment.
- 6:19Feel the outline of yourself, from the top of your head to your heels.
- 6:33Breathe in through your nose and out through your nose, if that's comfortable.
- 6:46Silence. Let your shoulders drop again if they've crept up.
- 6:58When the arithmetic that will not balance arrives, name it once, quietly, and go back to the breath. Naming is not fixing, and that is fine.
- 7:17Think of the worry that follows the bills as a guest that arrived without knocking. You can let it stand in the hallway.
- 7:35Follow one full breath from the moment it starts to the moment it ends.
- 7:49Remind yourself, slowly: I am safe in this moment, even while the fear about money in the night is here. Safety and difficulty can share a room.
- 8:09You might be planning something. Notice the planning, then come back.
- 8:21If you're irritated, that's allowed. Irritation is just weather.
- 8:32A short silence. Let it be empty.
- 8:42Feel the contact points — feet, seat, back. That contact is the whole anchor.
- 8:56Let it be this simple.
- 9:05Let your breathing go back to whatever it does when nobody is watching.
- 9:18Come back at your own speed. The room will wait.
- 9:30Keep following the air.
