Focus session for design work: 50 minutes, birds at dawn, before something difficult

50 minutes of design work, with birds at dawn and a note on what to do when you drift.

50:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

If you're sitting, let the chair do the work of holding you upright. It works best in the hour before something difficult. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.

1 Before you start

  • Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
  • Choose one question to answer in this block, rather than a whole subject to cover.
  • Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
  • Decide in advance that a bad sentence is still progress.
  • Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.

2 While the timer runs

  • If a thought will not leave, give it one line on the page and return to the task.
  • When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
  • The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
  • When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.

3 When it ends

  • Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
  • Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.
  • Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.

4What to put on

birds at dawn — Bright but not sharp. Better for early sessions than for late ones.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
