Deep work timer: 25 minutes of design work (birds at dawn), when you are at home and cannot settle
One block of design work with birds at dawn underneath. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
If you're lying down, let the mattress hold all of you. You can stop holding yourself up. Being at home and unable to settle is a very specific problem. No preamble. We start with the body.
1 Before you start
- Get water now, so you do not have to get up in fifteen minutes.
- Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
- Promise yourself you will not check anything until the timer ends, including "just quickly".
- Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
2 While the timer runs
- If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
- Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
- It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
- When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
3 When it ends
- If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.
- Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
4What to put on
birds at dawn — Bright but not sharp. Better for early sessions than for late ones.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
If this block does not fit, try 25-minute data work session with forest at dusk and a timer, when you need to stop thinking about work, 50-minute focus block for problem solving — a washing machine, when you want something simple or 45-minute drawing session with a stream and a timer, when you feel restless rather than tired.
