Deep work timer: 50 minutes of applications and forms (rain on a window), when you are somewhere noisy

One block of applications and forms with rain on a window underneath. Fifty minutes, the length of a therapy hour, with ten minutes off afterwards.

50:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Nothing needs to be decided in the next few minutes. Park the decisions. Noise is fine. You are not trying to hear anything subtle. Straight through, at a normal pace.

1 Before you start

  • Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
  • Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
  • Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
  • Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
  • Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".

2 While the timer runs

  • If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
  • When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
  • If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
  • When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.

3 When it ends

  • Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
  • If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.
  • Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.

4What to put on

rain on a window — Steady rain is broadband noise with a slow natural rhythm. It masks speech and keyboard clatter without being interesting enough to listen to.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
