Focus session · applications and forms · 45 min
45-minute focus session for applications and forms with rain on a window, when your attention is scattered
45 minutes on applications and forms — dull but finite. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.
45:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Drop your attention from your head into your chest for a second. Scattered attention is the raw material, not an obstacle. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.
1 Before you start
- Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
- Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
- Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
- If your mind is already racing, write down the three loudest thoughts before you begin.
- Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
2 While the timer runs
- If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
- If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
- If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
- When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
3 When it ends
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
- Write down the question you could not answer, so it has somewhere to live.
- Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
4What to put on
rain on a window — Steady rain is broadband noise with a slow natural rhythm. It masks speech and keyboard clatter without being interesting enough to listen to.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
