Focus session · applications and forms · 90 min
90-minute focus session for applications and forms with a fan or air conditioner, when you have been meaning to start
90 minutes on applications and forms — dull but finite. One full ultradian cycle, for work that needs a long runway.
90:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Let your forehead smooth out. Most of us hold a small frown there all day. You have been meaning to start. This is the least intimidating way in. Follow the instructions and let the rest look after itself.
1 Before you start
- Get water now, so you do not have to get up in fifteen minutes.
- If your mind is already racing, write down the three loudest thoughts before you begin.
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
- If you are dreading it, make the first action physical: open the file, sharpen the pencil.
- Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
2 While the timer runs
- When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
- It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
3 When it ends
- Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
- Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.
- Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
4What to put on
a fan or air conditioner — A constant mechanical hum with no variation. The lack of change is the point — nothing in it asks for your attention.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
