Deep work timer: 45 minutes of design work (a fan or air conditioner), when you are not in the mood

One block of design work with a fan or air conditioner underneath. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.

45:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Let your tongue rest down, away from the roof of your mouth. Not being in the mood is a normal starting point. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.

1 Before you start

  • Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
  • If you are dreading it, make the first action physical: open the file, sharpen the pencil.
  • Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
  • Lower the bar until starting feels almost silly, then start.
  • Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.

2 While the timer runs

  • If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
  • The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
  • If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
  • Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.

3 When it ends

  • Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
  • Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
  • Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.

4What to put on

a fan or air conditioner — A constant mechanical hum with no variation. The lack of change is the point — nothing in it asks for your attention.
