45-minute design work session with vinyl crackle and a timer, when you have been meaning to start
Sit down, press start, and make decisions for 45 minutes. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Keep your eyes open if you like, resting on one point of the floor a metre or two ahead. You have been meaning to start. This is the least intimidating way in. This is a short one, so let's use the time properly.
1 Before you start
- Decide now what you will do when the timer ends. Otherwise the decision will eat the first five minutes.
- Let go of the version of this task you imagined doing perfectly.
- Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
- Choose one question to answer in this block, rather than a whole subject to cover.
- Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
2 While the timer runs
- When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
- It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
- If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
- If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
3 When it ends
- Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
- If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.
- Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
4What to put on
vinyl crackle — A thin layer of surface noise over nothing much. Just enough texture to stop the room feeling empty.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
