Focus session for applications and forms: 45 minutes, a fan or air conditioner, when you have just finished work

45 minutes of applications and forms, with a fan or air conditioner and a note on what to do when you drift.

45:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Take one breath that is slightly slower than the last one. That is enough to start. The gap right after work is the easiest one to use. This is a short one, so let's use the time properly.

1 Before you start

  • Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
  • Remember that motivation usually arrives after starting, not before.
  • Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
  • Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
  • Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.

2 While the timer runs

  • If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
  • When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
  • When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
  • If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.

3 When it ends

  • Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
  • Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
  • Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.

4What to put on

a fan or air conditioner — A constant mechanical hum with no variation. The lack of change is the point — nothing in it asks for your attention.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
