Deep work timer: 45 minutes of admin and email (distant thunder), if you are sceptical about all of this

One block of admin and email with distant thunder underneath. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.

45:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Put both feet flat on the floor and let them take some of the weight. Scepticism is welcome. You do not have to believe anything for this to work. This works better when you don't overthink it.

1 Before you start

  • Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
  • Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
  • Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
  • Lower the bar until starting feels almost silly, then start.
  • Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.

2 While the timer runs

  • If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
  • When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
  • Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
  • Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.

3 When it ends

  • Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
  • Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
  • Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.

4What to put on

distant thunder — Low rumbles with long gaps. Suits people who find sudden noises more distracting than constant ones.
