45-minute admin and email session with a train carriage and a timer, when you have already had a long week

Sit down, press start, and clear the queue for 45 minutes. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.

45:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Sit however you were already sitting. You don't have to straighten up first. Long weeks are cumulative. This is a small subtraction. Straight through, at a normal pace.

1 Before you start

  • Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
  • Decide what you will do if you get stuck: write the problem out, then move on.
  • Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
  • Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
  • Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.

2 While the timer runs

  • If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
  • If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
  • If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
  • If a thought will not leave, give it one line on the page and return to the task.

3 When it ends

  • Have a drink of water before you check anything.
  • Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
  • If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.

4What to put on

a train carriage — Rhythmic, low, and slightly rumbly. Many people find the motion-and-noise combination easier to work to than silence.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
