A 25-minute block for admin and email, with a fireplace, if you have done this a hundred times
A single 25-minute block for admin and email — in one pass, without opening new tabs.
25:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Unclench your jaw. You were probably holding it without noticing. If you have done this a hundred times, change one small thing tonight. No preamble. We start with the body.
1 Before you start
- Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
- Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
- Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
- If you are dreading it, make the first action physical: open the file, sharpen the pencil.
- Decide now what you will do when the timer ends. Otherwise the decision will eat the first five minutes.
2 While the timer runs
- If you are bored, the boredom is usually the last thing before something clicks.
- If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
3 When it ends
- Write down the question you could not answer, so it has somewhere to live.
- Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
- Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.
4What to put on
a fireplace — Crackles and a low roar underneath. Warm, irregular, and undemanding.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
