Deep work timer: 25 minutes of language practice (brown noise), when you are not in the mood
One block of language practice with brown noise underneath. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.
25:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Quick check: is anything genuinely urgent in this exact minute? Usually the answer is no. Not being in the mood is a normal starting point. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.
1 Before you start
- Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
- Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
- Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
- Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
- Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
2 While the timer runs
- Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
- Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
3 When it ends
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
- Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
- Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
4What to put on
brown noise — Lower and softer than white noise, closer to a waterfall heard from a distance. Good if white noise feels too hissy.
