90-minute studying session with a fan or air conditioner and a timer, when you are not in the mood
Sit down, press start, and take in the material for 90 minutes. One full ultradian cycle, for work that needs a long runway.
90:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Your breathing doesn't have to change yet. Let it be whatever size it currently is. Not being in the mood is a normal starting point. Keep it simple: breath in, breath out, notice.
1 Before you start
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
- Promise yourself you will not check anything until the timer ends, including "just quickly".
- Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.
- Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
- Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
2 While the timer runs
- If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
- If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
- When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
- When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
3 When it ends
- Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
- Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
4What to put on
a fan or air conditioner — A constant mechanical hum with no variation. The lack of change is the point — nothing in it asks for your attention.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
