Deep work timer: 25 minutes of applications and forms (distant traffic), before you go back to something hard

One block of applications and forms with distant traffic underneath. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.

25:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Turn your phone face down if it's within reach. If it's in another room, even better. Five minutes here is cheaper than an hour of grinding. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.

1 Before you start

  • Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
  • Lower the bar until starting feels almost silly, then start.
  • Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
  • If your mind is already racing, write down the three loudest thoughts before you begin.
  • Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.

2 While the timer runs

  • It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
  • If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
  • If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
  • If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.

3 When it ends

  • If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.
  • Say the session is finished, out loud if you can. It marks the boundary.
  • Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.

4What to put on

distant traffic — A low continuous wash from a road you are not on. Familiar and easy to stop hearing.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
