A 90-minute block for applications and forms, with café murmur, when you want to be left alone

A single 90-minute block for applications and forms — dull but finite.

90:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Sit however you were already sitting. You don't have to straighten up first. Nothing here asks anything of you socially. This works better when you don't overthink it.

1 Before you start

  • Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
  • Remember that motivation usually arrives after starting, not before.
  • Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
  • If you are dreading it, make the first action physical: open the file, sharpen the pencil.
  • Get water now, so you do not have to get up in fifteen minutes.

2 While the timer runs

  • If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
  • Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
  • If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
  • The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.

3 When it ends

  • Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
  • Write down the question you could not answer, so it has somewhere to live.
  • Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.

4What to put on

café murmur — The blur of other people talking, with none of the words close enough to follow. Some people concentrate better with a low level of company.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
