A 45-minute block for decluttering, with a fan or air conditioner, if you have done this a hundred times
A single 45-minute block for decluttering — one surface at a time.
45:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Let the first out-breath be longer than the in-breath. Nothing dramatic, just longer. If you have done this a hundred times, change one small thing tonight. This works better when you don't overthink it.
1 Before you start
- Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
- Let go of the version of this task you imagined doing perfectly.
- Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
- If you are dreading it, make the first action physical: open the file, sharpen the pencil.
- Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
2 While the timer runs
- When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
- If a thought will not leave, give it one line on the page and return to the task.
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
3 When it ends
- Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.
- Write down the question you could not answer, so it has somewhere to live.
- Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
4What to put on
a fan or air conditioner — A constant mechanical hum with no variation. The lack of change is the point — nothing in it asks for your attention.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
