25-minute focus block for editing — a fan or air conditioner, when you have tried everything else
A timer, a short prep list, and 25 minutes to cut and tighten.
25:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Let your forehead smooth out. Most of us hold a small frown there all day. This assumes you have already tried the obvious things. Straight through, at a normal pace.
1 Before you start
- Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
- Promise yourself you will not check anything until the timer ends, including "just quickly".
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
- Choose one question to answer in this block, rather than a whole subject to cover.
- Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.
2 While the timer runs
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
- If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
- If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
3 When it ends
- Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
- Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
4What to put on
a fan or air conditioner — A constant mechanical hum with no variation. The lack of change is the point — nothing in it asks for your attention.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
