Focus session · decluttering · 90 min

90-minute focus block for decluttering — birds at dawn, if you are sceptical about all of this

A timer, a short prep list, and 90 minutes to move things out.

90:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Check your hands. Are they doing anything? Let them stop. Scepticism is welcome. You do not have to believe anything for this to work. Keep it simple: breath in, breath out, notice.

1 Before you start

  • Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.
  • If your mind is already racing, write down the three loudest thoughts before you begin.
  • Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
  • Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
  • Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.

2 While the timer runs

  • If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
  • When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
  • It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
  • If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.

3 When it ends

  • Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
  • Have a drink of water before you check anything.
  • Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.

4What to put on

birds at dawn — Bright but not sharp. Better for early sessions than for late ones.
