A 45-minute block for admin and email, with birds at dawn, when you are somewhere unfamiliar

A single 45-minute block for admin and email — in one pass, without opening new tabs.

45:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Loosen your grip on whatever you're holding, or imagine loosening it. It travels well. Hotels, spare rooms, other people’s sofas. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.

1 Before you start

  • Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
  • If your mind is already racing, write down the three loudest thoughts before you begin.
  • Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
  • Plan to leave the last two minutes for writing down where to pick up next time.
  • Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.

2 While the timer runs

  • Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
  • Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
  • When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
  • If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.

3 When it ends

  • Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
  • Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
  • Write down the question you could not answer, so it has somewhere to live.

4What to put on

birds at dawn — Bright but not sharp. Better for early sessions than for late ones.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
