A 25-minute block for editing, with vinyl crackle, when you need to stop thinking about work

A single 25-minute block for editing — the boring pass that makes it readable.

25:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Start with the noise that is already in the room. We are not going to try to remove it yet. Work thoughts are allowed to be there. They just do not get to drive. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.

1 Before you start

  • Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
  • Decide that today's session does not have to be good. It has to happen.
  • Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
  • Decide in advance that a bad sentence is still progress.
  • Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.

2 While the timer runs

  • If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
  • When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
  • The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
  • Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.

3 When it ends

  • Write down the question you could not answer, so it has somewhere to live.
  • Have a drink of water before you check anything.
  • Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.

4What to put on

vinyl crackle — A thin layer of surface noise over nothing much. Just enough texture to stop the room feeling empty.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
