90-minute focus block for exam revision — distant traffic, when you need to stop thinking about work

A timer, a short prep list, and 90 minutes to test yourself.

90:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Part of you is still in the last conversation you had. That's fine. It can sit here too. Work thoughts are allowed to be there. They just do not get to drive. Follow the instructions and let the rest look after itself.

1 Before you start

  • Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.
  • If your mind is already racing, write down the three loudest thoughts before you begin.
  • Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
  • Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
  • Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.

2 While the timer runs

  • It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
  • If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
  • The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
  • If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.

3 When it ends

  • Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
  • Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
  • Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.

4What to put on

distant traffic — A low continuous wash from a road you are not on. Familiar and easy to stop hearing.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
