Focus session for problem solving: 25 minutes, plain quiet, when you want to finish something
25 minutes of problem solving, with plain quiet and a note on what to do when you drift.
25:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Put a hand on your chest for a moment if that feels steadying. Or don't. Both are allowed. Wanting to finish something is a better motivation than wanting to relax. This works better when you don't overthink it.
1 Before you start
- Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
- Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
- Promise yourself you will not check anything until the timer ends, including "just quickly".
- Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
2 While the timer runs
- The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
- When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
- If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
- If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
3 When it ends
- Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
- Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
- Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
4What to put on
plain quiet — No added sound at all. If you have a quiet room, that is usually better than any recording of one.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
