50-minute focus session for planning with a fireplace, when you have been meaning to start
50 minutes on planning — on paper, so you can see it. Fifty minutes, the length of a therapy hour, with ten minutes off afterwards.
50:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Notice whether you're leaning forward. Most people are, slightly, all day. You have been meaning to start. This is the least intimidating way in. Straight through, at a normal pace.
1 Before you start
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
- Remember that motivation usually arrives after starting, not before.
- Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
- Tell yourself the goal is time spent, not output produced.
- Get water now, so you do not have to get up in fifteen minutes.
2 While the timer runs
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
- When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
- If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
3 When it ends
- Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
- Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
4What to put on
a fireplace — Crackles and a low roar underneath. Warm, irregular, and undemanding.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
