45-minute applications and forms session with birds at dawn and a timer, when you want to be left alone
Sit down, press start, and get through the questions for 45 minutes. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.
45:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Put both feet flat on the floor and let them take some of the weight. Nothing here asks anything of you socially. We'll go through it in order, without much decoration.
1 Before you start
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
- Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
- Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
- Decide that today's session does not have to be good. It has to happen.
- Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
2 While the timer runs
- If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
- If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
- If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
- When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
3 When it ends
- Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
- Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.
- Look out of a window for thirty seconds. Your eyes have been at one distance for a while.
4What to put on
birds at dawn — Bright but not sharp. Better for early sessions than for late ones.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
