Focus session · decluttering · 90 min
90-minute decluttering session with a library and a timer, when you feel restless rather than tired
Sit down, press start, and move things out for 90 minutes. One full ultradian cycle, for work that needs a long runway.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Let the floor take your weight through your feet, and stop holding yourself up for a second. Restless is different from tired, and it needs a different approach. We'll go through it in order, without much decoration.
1 Before you start
- Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
- Lower the bar until starting feels almost silly, then start.
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
- Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
- Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
2 While the timer runs
- If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
- If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
- If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
- Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
3 When it ends
- Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
- Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.
- Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
4What to put on
a library — Almost nothing: distant footsteps, a chair, a page turning. Useful if you want the feeling of a room where work is normal.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
If this block does not fit, try 45-minute focus session for coding with white noise, on a low-energy afternoon, Deep work timer: 45 minutes of brainstorming (brown noise), if you have five quiet minutes or Deep work timer: 25 minutes of research (distant thunder), after a difficult conversation.
