Deep work timer: 25 minutes of research (distant thunder), after a difficult conversation

One block of research with distant thunder underneath. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.

25:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Put both feet flat on the floor and let them take some of the weight. Difficult conversations leave a residue. This is for the residue. This works better when you don't overthink it.

1 Before you start

  • Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.
  • Promise yourself you will not check anything until the timer ends, including "just quickly".
  • Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
  • Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
  • Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.

2 While the timer runs

  • If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
  • It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
  • If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
  • If you are bored, the boredom is usually the last thing before something clicks.

3 When it ends

  • Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
  • Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
  • Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.

4What to put on

distant thunder — Low rumbles with long gaps. Suits people who find sudden noises more distracting than constant ones.
