45-minute focus session for admin and email with brown noise, when you have more time than usual
45 minutes on admin and email — in one pass, without opening new tabs. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
There is nothing to get right here. Nothing is being scored. This is the longer version, for a day with some slack in it. This works better when you don't overthink it.
1 Before you start
- Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.
- Plan to leave the last two minutes for writing down where to pick up next time.
- Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
- Decide that today's session does not have to be good. It has to happen.
- Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
2 While the timer runs
- If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
- If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
- The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
- If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
3 When it ends
- Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
- Look out of a window for thirty seconds. Your eyes have been at one distance for a while.
- Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.
4What to put on
brown noise — Lower and softer than white noise, closer to a waterfall heard from a distance. Good if white noise feels too hissy.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
If this block does not fit, try 45-minute focus block for brainstorming — forest at dusk, when you need to stop thinking about work, Focus session for drawing: 50 minutes, a library, when nothing else has worked today or 50-minute focus block for problem solving — a washing machine, when you want something simple.
