90-minute admin and email session with forest at dusk and a timer, when you have been putting it off

Sit down, press start, and clear the queue for 90 minutes. One full ultradian cycle, for work that needs a long runway.

90:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Let your belly be soft. Not sucked in. Just soft. You have been putting this off. Starting is the only step that matters. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.

1 Before you start

  • Get water now, so you do not have to get up in fifteen minutes.
  • Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
  • Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
  • Decide what you will do if you get stuck: write the problem out, then move on.
  • Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.

2 While the timer runs

  • If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
  • The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
  • When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
  • It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.

3 When it ends

  • Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
  • Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
  • Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.

4What to put on

forest at dusk — Birds settling, leaves moving, nothing sudden. It works because it sounds like a place you can safely ignore.
