45-minute focus session for admin and email with a fireplace, when you have already had a long week

45 minutes on admin and email — in one pass, without opening new tabs. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.

45:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Turn your phone face down if it's within reach. If it's in another room, even better. Long weeks are cumulative. This is a small subtraction. We'll go through it in order, without much decoration.

1 Before you start

  • Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
  • Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
  • Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
  • Decide in advance that a bad sentence is still progress.
  • Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.

2 While the timer runs

  • If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
  • When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
  • If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
  • When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.

3 When it ends

  • Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
  • Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
  • Look out of a window for thirty seconds. Your eyes have been at one distance for a while.

4What to put on

a fireplace — Crackles and a low roar underneath. Warm, irregular, and undemanding.
