25-minute focus session for writing with vinyl crackle, when the house is busy
25 minutes on writing — the first draft, not the good version. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.
25:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Unclench your jaw. You were probably holding it without noticing. It works with other people in the house. You do not need silence. Follow the instructions and let the rest look after itself.
1 Before you start
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
- Let go of the version of this task you imagined doing perfectly.
- Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
- Tell yourself the goal is time spent, not output produced.
- Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
2 While the timer runs
- When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
- If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
- If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
- If a thought will not leave, give it one line on the page and return to the task.
3 When it ends
- Look out of a window for thirty seconds. Your eyes have been at one distance for a while.
- Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
- Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
4What to put on
vinyl crackle — A thin layer of surface noise over nothing much. Just enough texture to stop the room feeling empty.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
