25-minute focus session for decluttering with a library, when nothing else has worked today
25 minutes on decluttering — one surface at a time. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
You don't have to empty your mind. Nobody has ever managed that, including the people who wrote the instructions. Nothing else has worked today. That is not a reason to skip this. Keep it simple: breath in, breath out, notice.
1 Before you start
- Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
- Plan to leave the last two minutes for writing down where to pick up next time.
- Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
- Decide that today's session does not have to be good. It has to happen.
- Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.
2 While the timer runs
- When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
- It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
3 When it ends
- Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
- If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.
- Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
4What to put on
a library — Almost nothing: distant footsteps, a chair, a page turning. Useful if you want the feeling of a room where work is normal.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
If this block does not fit, try A 25-minute block for design work, with café murmur, before something difficult, A 50-minute block for studying, with distant thunder, when the weather has kept you inside or 25-minute coding session with rain on a window and a timer, when you are cold and want to be warm.
