Soft 4-7-8 breathing: 8 rounds for bedtime, when you have been meaning to start

A 4 · 4 · 8 rhythm — the hold cut short, the long exhale kept.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Breathe in through your nose for 4 counts, hold for 4. Then out for 8, slowly, without pushing. You have been meaning to start. This is the least intimidating way in. Notice what's solid: the floor, the chair, your own weight.

Why it can help

The long exhale is the working part. A slow out-breath is one of the few direct levers you have on your own arousal level.

One round is 16 seconds. At the default 8 rounds this practice runs 128 seconds — about 2 minutes — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • at your desk, with the screen turned off for a moment
  • when you have been given bad news and need to keep functioning
  • in the two minutes after a difficult phone call

Tips

  • Do it with your shoulders still. The movement should be in your ribs and belly.
  • There is no need to breathe deeply. Long and quiet is the aim.
  • If holding for the full count feels tight, drop every number by one. The shape matters more than the size.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
