Breathing exercise · 4 · 4 · 8

Soft 4-7-8 breathing — 4 · 4 · 8 — for deep focus, if you are doing this instead of scrolling

Rounds of 4 · 4 · 8, with the counting done for you.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

The ratio is 4 in, hold for 4, 8 out. Only the out-breath needs any attention. Choosing this over scrolling counts as a good decision, even a small one. Start with what's physical. Everything else can wait.

Why it can help

Doubling the exhale changes the ratio your body uses to decide how safe it is.

One round is 16 seconds. At the default 4 rounds this practice runs 64 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • just before you have to say something difficult
  • in the minutes before an appointment you are dreading
  • when you are tired but cannot afford to be

Tips

  • Do not chase the feeling. If nothing happens, nothing happened.
  • If you lose count, start the round again rather than guessing.
  • Holding your breath is optional in every exercise here. You can always breathe through instead.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
