Soft 4-7-8 breath (4 · 4 · 8) for a long wait, when you are short on time

4 · 4 · 8 breathing: the hold cut short, the long exhale kept.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Take 4 counts to breathe in, hold for 4, and 8 to breathe out. Keep the out-breath unhurried. Pick this one when you are short on time. Notice what's solid: the floor, the chair, your own weight.

Why it can help

The hold, where there is one, is short. The work is in the length of the release, not the pause.

One round is 16 seconds. At the default 6 rounds this practice runs 96 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • when you are tired but cannot afford to be
  • in the two minutes after a difficult phone call
  • at your desk, with the screen turned off for a moment

Tips

  • Do it before you need it once, so that it is familiar when you do.
  • Do it with your shoulders still. The movement should be in your ribs and belly.
  • Holding your breath is optional in every exercise here. You can always breathe through instead.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
