Breathing exercise · 3 · 8
Double-inhale sigh
Find calm in the chaos with a 3 · 8 rhythm, guided by the numbers.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Add a soft second inhale to your initial breath, then exhale it all out through your mouth. You're on a break, surrounded by the buzz of the office. This is a simple way to reset. The body is your best ally in these moments.
Why it can help
This breathing pattern feels more like a natural response than a deliberate act, making it effective even when your mind is racing.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 3s | 0s |
| Exhale | 8s | 3s |
One round is 11 seconds. At the default 4 rounds this practice runs 44 seconds — about a minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- as you prepare to enter a crowded meeting
- when you're caught in a stressful work deadline
- when you're startled awake by a phone call at 3am
Tips
- Place a hand on your ribcage to feel the breath's movement.
- Use the timer on your phone or a clock to keep track of the counts.
- Since there are no pauses, you can breathe without waiting for a signal.
Please note
The gentle double inhale is soothing, but if you feel faint, switch to a single inhale and a longer exhale. If you feel dizzy, take a break. If you have heart or lung issues, consult a doctor before beginning any new breathing routine.
If this rhythm does not suit you, try How to use Coherent 5-5 breathing for the commute, 2-1-4 breathing: 12 rounds for a hard conversation or Slow box breathing: 5 rounds for a lonely evening.
