How to use Gentle box breathing for travel days, on a day that started badly
3 · 3 · 3 · 3 breathing: a smaller square, for when four counts feels long.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Breathe in for 3, hold for 3, out for 3, hold for 3. Picture tracing the sides of a square. That is the whole exercise. A day that started badly does not have to stay that way. Notice what's solid: the floor, the chair, your own weight.
Why it can help
Because the counts are the same in and out, your body does not have to decide anything. It just follows.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 3s | 0s |
| Hold | 3s | 3s |
| Exhale | 3s | 6s |
| Hold again | 3s | 9s |
One round is 12 seconds. At the default 6 rounds this practice runs 72 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- before you open the email you have been avoiding
- at the start of a study session, to set the tone
- just before you have to say something difficult
Tips
- Try the same pattern at a different time of day and see whether it feels different.
- If your mind wanders to counting the rounds left, that is normal. Come back to the numbers.
- Never push through a hold. Coming out of it early is always the right call.
Please note
If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
If this rhythm does not suit you, try How to use 3-5-7 breathing for being unwell, when you are short on time, Box breath (4 · 4 · 4 · 4) for a stolen moment of caregiving, when you are too tired to try hard or 5-7 breathing: 6 rounds for Monday morning, when the day has been loud.
