Breathing exercise · 4 · 4 · 8

How to use Soft 4-7-8 breathing for a noisy room, on a day that started badly

The pattern is 4 · 4 · 8, which is the hold cut short, the long exhale kept.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Breathe in through your nose for 4 counts, hold for 4. Then out for 8, slowly, without pushing. A day that started badly does not have to stay that way. We'll stay close to sensations rather than ideas.

Why it can help

Long exhales are easy to do quietly, at a desk, in a queue, without anyone noticing.

One round is 16 seconds. At the default 4 rounds this practice runs 64 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • at the kitchen table, with a cup of tea going cold
  • in the car, parked, before you go inside
  • before a presentation, in the corridor

Tips

  • It is fine to breathe through your mouth if your nose is blocked. Nose is usually easier.
  • Try it lying down with your knees bent if sitting upright feels like effort.
  • Never push through a hold. Coming out of it early is always the right call.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
