Breathing exercise · 4 · 4 · 4 · 4

Box breath (4 · 4 · 4 · 4) for a stolen moment of caregiving, when you are too tired to try hard

A 4 · 4 · 4 · 4 rhythm — four equal sides, like tracing a square.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Count to 4 on the way in, 4 at the top, 4 on the way out, 4 at the bottom. Repeat. Too tired to try hard is exactly the right amount of tired for this. Nothing abstract for the next few minutes.

Why it can help

The pattern occupies the part of your mind that would otherwise be rehearsing the worst case.

The pattern, in seconds

One round is 16 seconds. At the default 8 rounds this practice runs 128 seconds — about 2 minutes — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • when you are tired but cannot afford to be
  • when you have five minutes and no idea where to start
  • when you notice your shoulders are up near your ears

Tips

  • If your mind wanders to counting the rounds left, that is normal. Come back to the numbers.
  • Rest for a few seconds between rounds if the pattern feels demanding.
  • A hold should feel like a pause, not like running out of air.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
