Coherent 4-4 breathing exercise for a hot day — when you have already had a long week

A four and four, if five feels like a stretch pattern, counted for you on screen.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Count 4 on the way in and 4 on the way out. Keep them the same length. Long weeks are cumulative. This is a small subtraction. Stay with what you can actually feel.

Why it can help

The simplicity is the feature. Under stress, simple is the only thing that survives.

The pattern, in seconds

One round is 8 seconds. At the default 8 rounds this practice runs 64 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • when the day has been fine but you still feel braced
  • when your thoughts are moving faster than you are
  • as a way to mark the end of the working day

Tips

  • If you have a cold or a blocked nose, skip the holds and breathe through your mouth.
  • Rest for a few seconds between rounds if the pattern feels demanding.
  • Because there is no pause, you can keep this going while walking or talking.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
