Breathing exercise · 2 · 2 · 2 · 2

Beginner box breath (2 · 2 · 2 · 2) for the end of the working day, when you feel fine and want to stay that way

Rounds of 2 · 2 · 2 · 2, with the counting done for you.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Breathe in for 2, hold for 2, out for 2, hold for 2. Picture tracing the sides of a square. That is the whole exercise. Feeling fine is a good reason to do this, not a reason to skip it. Simple things first: contact, weight, temperature.

Why it can help

This is a composure exercise more than a calming one. It gives you something to do while a feeling passes.

One round is 8 seconds. At the default 12 rounds this practice runs 96 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • when you cannot sleep and do not want to get up
  • before you walk into a room full of people
  • when you are tired but cannot afford to be

Tips

  • Aim for something you could keep up in a waiting room without anyone noticing.
  • Keep your feet flat on the floor. It helps more than it sounds like it should.
  • Holding your breath is optional in every exercise here. You can always breathe through instead.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
