Breathing exercise · 5 · 5 · 5 · 5

Slow box breathing for heavy days, when you cannot concentrate on anything else

A 5 · 5 · 5 · 5 rhythm — a wider square, once four feels comfortable.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Breathe in for 5, hold for 5, out for 5, hold for 5. Picture tracing the sides of a square. That is the whole exercise. When concentration is gone, work with what is left. Start with what's physical. Everything else can wait.

Why it can help

You can do it silently, in a meeting, without anyone knowing. That matters more than it sounds.

One round is 20 seconds. At the default 8 rounds this practice runs 160 seconds — about 2 minutes — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • when you wake at 3am and the room feels too quiet
  • in a hospital corridor, waiting for news
  • on a train or a bus, with your bag on your lap

Tips

  • Rest for a few seconds between rounds if the pattern feels demanding.
  • You can do this with your eyes open. Nothing here requires privacy.
  • Never push through a hold. Coming out of it early is always the right call.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
