About this practice
Slow, spoken guidance for self-doubt. A self-compassion session you can do after work. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: self-doubt
Self-doubt is a prediction, not a measurement. It reads uncertainty as evidence of inability, which is why it survives despite contrary evidence.
It tends to show up as:
- Questioning your ability before starting
- Assuming you are the least capable in the room
- Hesitating to state an opinion
Confidence is not required to act. This practice lowers the temperature enough that acting stops needing confidence first.
Doing this after work
- Change something physical first — shoes off, coat off — so the transition registers
- Do it before picking up the evening tasks
- Aim to end it fully, not just stop
Without a marker, work follows you into the evening. The session is the marker.
How self-compassion works
Self-compassion practice changes the tone of the inner voice rather than the content of the thoughts. It uses the same warmth and steadiness you would offer a friend, applied without requiring you to have earned it.
- Use the words you would actually say to someone you love
- Ask what you need, not what you deserve
- A hand on the chest or belly gives warmth and pressure a place to land
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Notice the temperature of the air on the backs of your hands.
- 0:13Say it once, plainly: this is hard, and I am allowed to find it hard.
- 0:27Everything that happens in the next few minutes is allowed to happen.
- 0:40Let the breath move at the speed of a sleeping person.
- 0:52Feel the slight stretch at the very bottom of the exhale.
- 1:04Notice your ribs on both sides. Wide, not squeezed.
- 1:15If the fear that you are not enough shows up, let it be there without arguing with it. You are not trying to remove it, just to sit beside it.
- 1:36You do not have to like the small voice saying you cannot to breathe through it. Liking was never the requirement.
- 1:53Count four breaths silently. Then stop counting and just follow.
- 2:05You do not have to solve the question mark over your ability in these few minutes. Your only job is to keep breathing while it is here.
- 2:25If nothing much is happening, that's not a problem. Nothing much is often the point.
- 2:39The question is not what you deserve. It is what you need, right now, in this moment.
- 2:54Let the last minute of quiet be the last minute of quiet.
