About this practice

For the times in the morning when self-doubt takes up more room than you would like — 3 minutes, grounding. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: self-doubt

Self-doubt is a prediction, not a measurement. It reads uncertainty as evidence of inability, which is why it survives despite contrary evidence.

It tends to show up as:

  • Questioning your ability before starting
  • Assuming you are the least capable in the room
  • Hesitating to state an opinion

Confidence is not required to act. This practice lowers the temperature enough that acting stops needing confidence first.

Doing this in the morning

  • Do it before checking your phone — the first minutes set the tone for the rest
  • Sitting up is better than lying down, or you will drift back to sleep
  • Light on your face helps more than any practice

Mornings can become a performance of productive habits. This one does not need to be done well.

How grounding works

Grounding brings attention to physical contact and the immediate environment. It works on the principle that the body cannot be somewhere else, so contact with the surface you are on is always available as an anchor.

  • Feel the contact points — feet, seat, back — and let them take your weight
  • Use the senses deliberately: what you can see, hear, touch
  • Return to solidity whenever attention drifts

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Feel your ribs move. That is all the machinery you need to pay attention to right now.
  2. 0:15Come back to the solid things: weight, temperature, surface. They are always available.
  3. 0:28Let your body feel heavier than it did a minute ago. Let the chair or the floor take it.
  4. 0:44Let the exhale empty you a little more than usual, but not to the point of strain.
  5. 0:59Notice the small gap after each exhale. Rest there for half a second.
  6. 1:12Feel your heart somewhere in there, doing its work without instructions.
  7. 1:24Feel the weight of the question mark over your ability somewhere specific, then let the floor take a share of it.
  8. 1:41Imagine softening the edges of the fear that you are not enough. Not erasing it, just letting the sharp parts go a degree softer.
  9. 2:00Feel the last part of the exhale, where it turns into nothing.
  10. 2:13the small voice saying you cannot may quiet down, or it may not. Either is fine. We are practising staying, not performing calm.
  11. 2:31If you're counting the minutes, that's fine. Count them and come back.
  12. 2:44If your mind has gone somewhere else, the floor under you has not moved. Start from there.
  13. 2:59Let the quiet end on its own rather than cutting it off.
